SANTA MONICA COLLEGE – MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE BUILDING

The Mathematics & Science Building project at Santa Monica College involved electrical infrastructure and systems installation supporting construction of the college’s new four-story, LEED Gold-certified STEM facility located on the main campus in Santa Monica, California. The approximately 110,000–122,000 square-foot academic building consolidates the Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences departments into a single modern instructional environment designed to support advanced science education, laboratory instruction, and interdisciplinary learning. Public project information identifies the facility as containing 22 classrooms, 11 laboratories, collaborative learning areas, a 100-seat planetarium, rooftop observatory, lecture spaces, study areas, and advanced hybrid-learning instructional technology throughout the building.

TAFT Electric’s scope included installation and integration of electrical distribution systems, lighting infrastructure, laboratory power systems, and low-voltage support pathways throughout the academic facility. The building incorporated extensive instructional and laboratory infrastructure supporting physical sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, and mathematics programs, including specialized laboratory environments, advanced classroom technology systems, and hybrid learning capabilities. Publicly available project information notes that the facility includes advanced instructional technology, integrated laboratory systems, a state-of-the-art planetarium and observatory, and energy-efficient building systems supporting the project’s LEED Gold certification.

The project also included sustainable building systems and energy-efficient infrastructure consisting of high-performance lighting systems, daylight integration through channel glass façades, efficient mechanical systems, reflective roofing systems, and campus sustainability measures designed to reduce long-term energy consumption. The building was constructed adjacent to the existing science complex and connected through a bridge walkway while maintaining ongoing campus operations throughout construction activities.
