The Mission Basilica San Buenaventura Lighting System Upgrade involved the installation and integration of a new LED theatrical lighting system within the historic Mission Basilica San Buenaventura in Ventura, California. The project replaced an aging lighting system that had been in place since the 1980s and was designed to improve illumination of the basilica’s sacred artwork, religious statues, Stations of the Cross frescos, tapestry, and architectural features. The lighting upgrade was completed shortly after the mission was elevated to Minor Basilica status by Pope Francis and was part of a broader effort to enhance the worship, visitor, and livestream experience within the historic church.

TAFT Electric’s work supported the installation of a highly focused, energy-efficient LED lighting environment designed for a sensitive historic worship space. The system utilized Chauvet Professional Ovation theatrical fixtures, including Ovation P-56WW and Ovation E-160WW fixtures, selected for warm-white output, quiet operation, controlled beam performance, and clean illumination with minimal shadowing or spill. The lighting system was organized into 12 separate lighting stations, allowing the basilica’s artwork and devotional elements to be illuminated through multiple intensity and scene configurations.

The project required careful electrical coordination within an active sacred and historic environment, with installation work focused on fixture placement, power and control infrastructure, pathway coordination, and preservation-sensitive integration of modern lighting technology. The completed system delivers improved visibility, energy-efficient theatrical enhancement, and a more refined worship and visitor experience while respecting the architectural and historical character of the basilica.
